Five Minute Friday

How it works: Write on one word for five minutes. No editing. Then link up your post with the rest of the brave writers on Five-Minute Friday and encourage them by reading and commenting on what they’ve shared. {All the details for how to play along are here.}

Today’s word: Hands

He hands me a cup of coffee, steaming hot and mixed perfectly with cream and sugar, and I wrap my hands around it. With bleary, sleep-filled eyes I look up at him and mumble, Thank you. He smiles, kisses my head and retreats from my bedroom sanctuary.

In a little while, not long at all really, these hands wrapped comfortably around this warm mug will make breakfast for hungry little girls. They will assist a four-year-old in the potty. They will hold a six-year-old’s face gently so that we make eye contact while I correct her behavior.

In a little while, these hands will dab Arnica on scrapes and apply band-aids to hurts and fix hair in pony tails for the fifteenth time because they’ve become loosened from play.

In a little while, these hands will empty the dishwasher, clear the table, point to words as we read favorite books, fold laundry and help little girls put sandals or princess dresses on.

In a little while, these hands will tap across my laptop keyboard, writing thoughts, writing stories, writing emails, sharing ideas.

In a little while, these hands will hold my head in my hands as I take a moment and yearn for bedtime.

In a little while, these hands will hold small hands in mine as I snuggle and cuddle and whisper softly to little girls curled in my lap, squeezed by my side or drifting off to sleep in the dark as I sing, Jesus Loves You.

In a little while, these hands will play outside and work inside and clean and comfort and write and pick up toys and gently stroke little girl faces.

In a little while, these hands will be busy. They will be showing love and gentleness and kindness.

But for right now, they cradle a cup of coffee and all of my prayers that I will raise to Jesus as I sit, still in my bed, still under the covers, in bedroom sanctuary. Here, in this messy sanctuary, I raise my hands in worship and prayer and start my day with coffee and with Jesus.
