“When you go out to fight your enemies and you face horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid. The Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you! When you prepare for battle, the priest must come forward to speak to the troops. (Deuteronomy 20:1-2)
(36/365 days of Fear Not)
In his book, Do the Work, Steven Pressfield talks a lot about Resistance, the invisible force of nature that opposes those who dare to try something new or to create something new. For Pressfield, Resistance includes fear, doubt, distraction, procrastination, perfectionism and it wages war against all of us, especially if we are involved in an artistic endeavor or a creative pursuit, living out a God-given dream or purpose or undertaking any routine intended to better the self.
And, because Resistance is one of the tools of the enemy that prowls around to destroy and devour, it is a daily battle into which we have no choice but to enter lest we abandon our dreams and, therefore, ourselves.
It’s strange to think about our lives being a daily battleground, but they are.
If there is any love of Christ in you, any lure of the holy, you are a target for the enemy. And he will stop at nothing to derail you and discourage you and to stop you from living out the passion and purpose that God has given you to share with His world. His broken, hurting, messed-up and in-need-of-love world.
And so, each day is a battle. It is spiritual warfare and it requires strength and tools that are not necessarily at our disposal.
But, do not be afraid.
No matter how great the army or the enemy you face as you seek to live out your God-given dream and purpose, God is with you. And He revels in turning the tide on great armies and seemingly invincible opponents with average and ordinary folks like you and me. Think David and Goliath, Moses and the Egyptians, Joshua and the city of Jericho, Gideon and the Midianites.
As you prepare to do battle for your God-given dream, seek the Great High Priest, Jesus and let Him speak His truth into your heart and into your mind. Put on the full armor of God and do not be afraid though the Resistance is strong and the enemy seeks to devour and destroy.
What you are about to do, what you are doing, is important enough to rouse the enemy and Resistance.
And it’s important enough to raise God to holy defender. He desires to fight for you and for the dream He’s given to you.
Some days you will return home bloodied and exhausted.
But, fear not, you will rise to fight another day.
Because, ultimately, this is God’s fight more than yours.
